As we are in the Valentine’s Day zone the romantic films are in full flow right now. Most people, dating or single, like to enjoy a good rom com at this time and why not? Something not too heavy and hopeful, right?
So imagine my surprise when I got a press release regarding the top films searched in the UK. Side note, I only rate 5 of the films listed and find the tastes of the UK somewhat questionable if they deem 50 First Dates and La la Land worthy options.
Direct2Florist examined Google data to see which Valentine’s Day movie is the UK’s favourite – as well as which have seen the biggest increase in popularity since last February. No surprise to hear that The Notebook has been revealed as the UK’s favourite Valentine’s Day Movie.
With 2018’s Love, Simon seeing the biggest surge of popularity since last February, an increase of 306% from last year.

The increase in popularity of LGBT highlights how ‘other’ can sell. It’s not all about the white heterosexual couple. We also have the white gay couple now Or do we? (No spoilers for those who haven’t seen them!)
Call me by your name is a staid favourite but definitely worthy of making the list. Not so sure about Love, Simon but I guess the younger audiences relate to it. That said there are better British LGBT movies so, again side eyeing the British.
Meanwhile no Black films made that list which, given the exposure to Black American films in the UK, this isn’t surprising but it is disappointing. Also no foreign language films. The UK google lot aren’t very adventurous maybe? I am going through a bit of a South American film phase despite my lack of Spanish language skills. It’s a different angle. I find American romances rather abrasive in comparison and less honest.
Malcolm and Marie. Denzel Jr in his first star role plays an emotionally abusive lover to a young Zendaya annoyed at him for not thanking her in a well shot but boring portrayal of an unlikeable couple. Thanks Hollywood. Thanks a fucking lot!
There’s Sylvie’s Love on Amazon Prime if you want a cute, easy love story. Otherwise it’s best that you stick to the classics such as Jump the Broom on Netflix. I’ve added an old list here for those who are stuck for inspiration. I enjoy Last Holiday with Queen Latifah although there isn’t as much screen time between her and LL Cool j as one would like. Queen Latifah is my favourite, consistent leading lady. They need to give her more. Can’t wait to see what she does with The Equaliser
On a positive note we do have Coming to America 2 coming to Amazon Prime on 5th March although that looks more comedy than rom com. Maybe that will make up for a lacklustre Black History Month?
